Limited water reservoirs in England:-
The UK is about to run out water resources very quickly in future times, and it can push to an edge of climate change. The Public Account Committee (PAC) has issued a report recently, according to this report, some areas of England can face a scarcity of water in the coming twenty years. Now at present, only 8% of water reservoirs in England are at risk of falling short, while it will increase to 45% in 2035 according to research. The only way to prevent this scarcity is to make an ultimate policy for water usage, and water wastage should be avoided completely. The extended period of summer drought demands an increase in the supply of water; thus, people tend to store water for household uses and irrigation uses. While the speed of water flow in reservoirs also affects the storage, as the slow flow will cause an increase in pollutants in water. The Environmental Agency has shown in a report that 11% of rivers are at risk of water shortfall across the UK, while 35% of groundwater is at risk of falling short due to water’s abstraction.
The main problem related to water scarcity is the leakage of water supplies, and management is totally failed to overcome this issue of leakage. This problem carries a long history, since the last decade and reported in different researches by cheap essay help, the South West water companies have invested a considerable amount in fixing these leakages but all in vain. The government should take valuable steps to prevent water resources’ shortfalls if they want to provide water to the public in the coming years. They should make a policy to build a league table to enforce water companies to mend leakages in pipelines.
While the government claimed that they are taking essential steps to improve water companies’ performance to minimize water wastage, on the other hand, many streets of London show the scene of a stream flowing in streets, and it has damaged the trust of the government on water supply companies. A report issued by PAC stated that one-fifth of the daily supply of water companies is wasted in different ways, mainly due to leakages. Water companies reported that the pipeline leakages are reduced to a minimum where the economic threshold is not compromised. If future environmental changes affect water resources, these companies will make a further plan to improve the commercial limit threshold for water supplies.
Regulations to improve water reservoirs:-
The Public Account Committee accuses ministers and regulators of water companies that they did not do enough to improve the infrastructure of water supply across the country. While it is claimed that the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) always showed a lack of leadership to maintain valuable water industry reforms. MPs accused that DEFRE is responsible for lack of leadership, and water companies cannot act refines for the betterment of supplies. The Committee Chair Person Mr. Meg Hillier said that we are making policies to set up new reforms in the system before it is too late, we will make a better plan to save our water resources. According to the report issued by DEFRA, the people of England and Wales use around 14 billion liters of water daily. Out of this, one fifth is wasted every day due to leaky pipes, but no one is there to take responsibility for this issue. Moreover, an efficiency label on household water-using appliances should be mandatory to save the extra usage of water.
Various uses of water resources:-
The experts have alarmed about an eventual shortfall of water reservoirs that may be faced keeping in view the present usage and methods to supply water across the country. Southern England may particularly face a scarcity of water in future summers while areas of Northern Ireland and North East England may also subject to face this danger in the future. Water resources are used for a variety of purposes in the country. The Whales uses the majority of water abstraction for producing electricity through the hydroelectric process, and it accounts for 73% of the total water usage. The remaining water is then returned to abstraction points after usage. A report showed that 3% of water is being used in irrigation, and 8% of water is being used for industrial purposes in the Whales. The household usage of water is 16% in the Whales.
Main issues of freshwater reservoirs:-
The main points which we are facing concerning the vulnerability of freshwater reservoirs are mentioned below:
- First of all, our infrastructure to supply water is not able to cope with long dry summers.
- As a result, we can face a shortage of water supply in the future summer.
- In dry conditions, there is no maintenance of river flows.
- Long and increased periods of droughts are coming to encounter us.
- The groundwater resources replenishment is unable due to the faulty system.
- The boreholes are continuously filling with increased levels of salinity.
- The industrial demand and irrigation needs are increasing day by day, and management is unable to manage abstraction licenses.
- A 4% rise in demand for water is reported by 2012, to fulfill household needs and garden watering by the public.
The situation of Jaws of death:-
The Chief Executive of the Environment Agency (EA), Mr. James Bevan, stated last year that the UK would face a situation of “Jaws of death” in the coming two decades, as there will be no water reservoirs left to fulfill the needs of public and our country. We will face a severe scarcity of water in our country unless we take necessary actions to save water from waste. In May, we encountered a complete lock down; still there was a record demand in water supply by households and industries due to unparalleled and dry sunny weather. According to the report of the trade association for water supply, a 20% average surged demand was recorded. Although PAC has launched a campaign to prevent wastage of water, they named it as “Love Water” campaign, but it deprives of central funding and other management issues still.
